Our calendar project began back in 2012 when three friends sat down
together one day and wondered what they could do to help improve Fukushima’s
image in the wake of the disaster the year before. Of those three friends,
Henare Akurangi was extremely passionate and determined that something be done.
Henare believed that actions speak louder than words and he proved it as he led
by example. He volunteered repeatedly to go to the affected coastal regions of
Fukushima to help clean up houses and neighborhoods, or to deliver food to
people in temporary housing. He often visited evacuation shelters to help where
he could and his visits always brought a smile to people’s faces. Sadly, Henare
passed away suddenly on June 17th, 2019. We are saddened by the loss
of such a good friend and inspiration to everyone who knew him. He had a huge
heart and always put others before himself. He loved Fukushima and its people,
so we hope to honour his memory by continuing with our project in the years to
come. This year, we dedicate our calendar to him.
Thank you, Henare. You made a positive difference in everyone’s lives. We are
all better for having known you. We, the people of Fukushima, will never forget
you.
